# Help

You'll learn the few things visitors need to browse a Preservated archive confidently.

Preservated hosts online collections for museums, historical societies, and community archives. Each institution decides what is public, what is members-only, and what can be downloaded.

## Find items

Start with search when you know a name, place, subject, date, or phrase. Search can match titles, descriptions, subjects, places, people, document text, OCR, and transcripts when the institution has made those available.

Use browsing when you want context. Collections group items by exhibit, donor, topic, place, project, or institutional arrangement.

## View item pages

An item page shows the image, document, recording, video, or object record with the information the institution has published. You may see dates, creators, people, subjects, places, identifiers, rights, credit lines, related collections, transcripts, or downloadable files.

Some records are very complete. Others may be newly imported, partially described, or waiting for review. Archives often improve over time.

## Download and cite

If downloads are allowed, the download button shows the available options for that item. Some items offer only web-size files; others may offer originals, transcripts, page images, or format-specific downloads.

Use the citation or credit information on the item page when referencing an item. Rights statements tell you what the institution believes you may do with the material.
